First Days of Texas

September 9, 2005

Someways...no, in most ways...it is Califonia with the not so hidden hotel bars and sushi joints and the traffic of the sprawl. Otherways, it's pure Texas, with menus printed on the lone star flag and every local brand red, white and blue. Welcome to Texas.

For now the reclusion offered by the hotel room has been a comfort. Soon enough though I will have to venture beyond the strip malls within walking distance and take a meander about this town. This is not how I had ever pictured it. It was to be New Orleans and then onto an island. The irony. Now it's Texas.

It is still beyond comprehension that an entire city has been made uninhabitable and, for all intents and purposes, New Orleans is gone.

One day at a time, everyone around me has resigned to. Even then, there seems to be too many hours of uncertainty. The only hope...Texas may even be an uncertainty.
